By Anthrocat2, Razill(who furnished most of the pictures); Other contributors:howdydee2003, Rubinous Members' and Non-members' Skill. Smithing is the end result of mining and one of the cornerstones of the RuneScape economy. Even the newest "n00b" can mine for free, smelt the ore for free, and then smith the metal for free into objects that may be sold on the open market or to other players. When first starting out, it's the easiest and fastest way to obtain armor, weapons and gold. The Smithing Skill actually consists of two parts- smelting, the converting of raw ore into metal bars, and smithing, the making of objects from the metal bars. Both are quite simple in RuneScape Mining for the ore will be covered in another Skill Guide, so here we will only be concerned with what to do after you've obtained some raw ore. All ores except iron must have a second ore mixed with them at the time of smelting to produce a metal bar. Iron however, has only a 50% success rate in smelting. Approximately half of all iron ore you smelt will be impure and fail to produce a metal bar, being consumed in the process and leaving you with nothing! This happens on a random basis- you will not have an equal amount of failures each time you smelt iron. However, over a short period of time, it will even out to be 50%. It should also be noted that the production of objects from gold and silver bars comes under crafting, not smithing, but the smelting of the metal from ores is a part of smithing and you will gain experience points in smithing for smelting those ores. To smelt metal from ore, you must first locate a smelting furnace. You must be holding the ore plus the correct number of any secondary ores required in your personal inventory. Simply approach the furnace and left-click on one of the ores to "use" it, and then left-click on the furnace. The game will automatically select the correct number of any secondary ores required from you inventory. The resulting metal bar will be deposited into your personal inventory. Once you have smelted the ore into metal bars, you can sell the bars at any general store, the mining store in the Dwarven Mine (likely to get a better price), sell to other players on the open market, or smith them into objects- gaining more experience points in the process and adding to the profits from your labor.
For smithing you must first locate a smithy with an anvil. In the "free zone" the smithys are located north of Falador, south of Rimmington, inside the Dwarven Mine, and two in Varrock. In the member's area, they're located in West Ardougne, the Seer's Village, Hemenster, Port Kahzard, and a locked one in Yanille that you can enter if you can pick the lock. Note that there is no place where a smelting furnace and a smithy are located together! All the furnaces and smithys are marked on the World Map.
Once you're at the smithy, left-click on a metal bar in your inventory, and then left-click again on the anvil. A menu will appear in the There are various items you can smith (click the metal bars in the smelting table below to see a table for each type of metal) but they require various experience levels. However Anthrocat2 points out that you get the points based on the amount of bars consumed, not the item made. For instance, making three daggers, using one metal bar each, will give you the same number of experience points as making one battle ax, which requires three bars, but also a higher smithing level. So even though you may have a low smithing level, you can still advance your experience with just a little extra work. This table shows how that works:
