Requirements:
- Level 10 Herblore
- Level 10 Agility
- Level 25 Thieving
Items Needed:
- Tinderbox
- Empty Vial
- A Cut Opal
- Pestle and Mortar
- 2 Ropes
- Charcoal
- A Cup of Tea (can be bought in Varrock)
You must be wearing Leather Gloves, Boots and a Brown Apron for the entire Quest.
Starting Point: Speak to an Examiner in the Exam Centre at the Digsite.
- He informs you that your Certificate of Commendation requires a Signature from the Curator of the Varrock Museum. Proceed to the Museum and talk with the Curator.
- Return to speak with an Examiner who will allow you can take an Exam. You will fail the Exam even if you give the correct Answers.
- Walk north to the Digsite and speak with the Students. They agree to help you only if you will help them first. Each Student has lost an item and they want you to find them.
- Student 1: Speak with the Student wearing the Green Shirt and Yellow Trousers (He is near the Panning Point). He will mention that he lost his Animal Skull, and that maybe one of the Workmen picked it up.
Pick-Pocket the Workmen until you find an Animal Skull: 
- Student 2: Speak with the Student wearing an Orange Shirt and Black Trousers, (He is north of the first Student). He will also tell you he lost his Special Cup, and that he last had it at the Panning Point. Pick up a Panning Tray at the Panning Point and attempt to pan. The Panning Guide intervenes and won't permit you to continue. Speak with him and he mentions that he would like a Cup of Tea. Give him the Cup of Tea and he in turn allows you pan.
Keep panning until you find the Special Cup: 
- Student 3: The only Female Student is just west of the Second Student. She will also tell you that she lost her Teddy Bear and that she last had it when she was walking around.
Head south until you find this Bush, search it and you will find the Teddy Bear: 
- Now you should have all the correct Answers to the Exam. Go back and re-take the Exam. You're Rewarded a Trowel and the ability to do Level One Digs.
- Return to the Students' location and ask for Exam Number Two Answers. When you have acquired all the Answers take the Exam. This time your Reward is a Rock Pick and the ability to do Level Two Digs.
- Again return to the Students and ask for the Answers to Exam Number Three. Each Student will give you an Answer except Student Three. She will want a Cut Opal for her Answer, (Can be found Panning here or Mining in Shilo Village). After you have all three Answers you're allowed to do Level Three Digs!
- Finally, go to the Digsite and locate a Level Three Site. Attempt to dig and you are stopped due to your lack of a Specimen Jar and a Specimen Brush.
- Specimen Brushes are obtained by Pick-Pocketing the Workman.
- Specimen Jars are found when you search this Sack in the northeast corner.
- When you have the Jar and Brush start digging at the Level Three Digsites until you find this Strange Talisman.
- Take the Talisman to the Expert up in the Exam Centre and he will give you a Scroll which allows you to use his Private Mining Site. Use this Scroll on a Workman so he'll allow you to use the Winch. Head to the Winch south of the northwest corner and lower Yourself into it (if you can't, use a Rope with the Winch). Pick up an Arcena Root and go back up.
- Go back to the Panning Point and use the Key on the Chest. Inside you will find some Unidentified Powder. Take it and head to the Barrels next to the Tent, and use your Trowel on it. Now use your Vial on it and you will get an Unidentified Liquid, (Do not drop your Vial from this point on!).
- Search the Bookcases in the Exam Centre and you will find a Book on Chemicals. Read it and go the northeast Winch.
- Head back to Exam Centre and show your Unidentified Items to the Expert and he will tell you what they are.
- Speak with the Workman in the cave and ask for the Chest Key (don't be afraid to beg quite a bit). After a few tries he'll give you the Key.
- Go to upstairs again and go to the Tent where the locked Chest is standing. Open it with the key and you'll get a white Chemical. Let the Archaological Expert identify it as Ammonium Nitrate.
- Grind your Charcoal, and use the Ground Charcoal, Ammonium Nitrate and Arcenia Root on the Nitroglycerin to make an Explosive Compound (Also don't drop this!).
- Once more return to the Digsite and head to the western Winch. You discover several Bricks blocking your Path. Use your Compound on it and then your Tinderbox with the Compound. This will clear out the Bricks rather handily. Go directly into the center and pick up the Stone Tablet.
- Show this to the Expert back in the Exam Centre and he will Reward you.
Reward: 2 Quest Points, 2,000 Herblore Experience, 15,300 Mining Experience and 2 Gold Bars.
