Rag and Bone Man Quest Guide

Start Point: Next to the Quarry, northeast of Varrock.

To Start: Speak to the Odd Old Man.

Quest Length: Medium.

Members Only: Yes.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Combat Level of around 20 advised.
Items Needed:
  • 8 Gold Pieces (Coins)
  • 1 Pot
  • 1 Tinderbox
  • 8 Logs (Of any type)
  • A Lantern
Recommended Items:
  • Amulet of Glory
  • A Weapon
  • Food (For Lower-Level Players)
  • Varrock Teleport Runes
  • Spiny Helm
  1. Head east of Varrock to the Path that leads to the Paterdomus (On the way to Canifis). Along the way there will be a Path that goes north to a Quarry where you mine Limestones.



  2. Follow that Path north to the Odd Old Man, he carries a Sack, and speak to him. He will tell you that he is an Archaeologist and he seeks some Bones. You will need to kill a few Creatures to get Fresh Bones and then boil them in Vinegar.


    Goblin (Level 2 and 5) (Goblin Skull): Lumbridge, Goblin Village.

    Bear (Level 19) (Bear Ribs): East of Rellekka, south of Varrock, northwest of Ardougne.

    Big frog (Level 24) (Big frog Leg): Lumbridge Swamp Cave (Bring a Lantern and Spiny Helm).

    Ram (Level 2) (Ram Skull): South of Varrock in the Sheep Pen, north of Lumbridge in the Sheep Pen.

    Unicorn (Level 15) (Unicorn Bone): North of Seers Village, south of Varrock, south of Edgeville, east of Rellekka, east of Draynor Village.

    Monkey (Level 3) (Monkey Paw): Karamja Island (Some Players may have to Range/Mage them if they have not completed Tai Bwo Wannai Trio Quest), Ardougne Zoo (Telegrab Runes required).

    Giant Rat (Level 3) (Giant Rat Bone): West of Lumbridge (south of the Tree Patch), Varrock Sewers.

    Giant Bat (Level 27) (Giant Bat Wing): Legends Guild Basement, Hero's Guild Basement, Yanille Agility Arena.
  3. Once you have all the Bones, teleport to Draynor Village using your Amulet of Glory. Speak to Fortunato in the Draynor Village Market, where the Seed Stalls are. Do NOT steal from his Wine Stall. If you do, he will not speak to you. You will then have to wait a while before you will be able to speak to him again. Ask if he has any Vinegar and then purchase eight Jugs of Vinegar at one Gold Piece per Jug.



  4. Bank and withdraw all eight types of Bones, one Tinderbox, one Pot, eight Logs, and eight Jugs of Vinegar. Head back to the Odd Old Man, near the Quarry, by teleport to Varrock.

  5. Once you arrive, there will be a Pot-Boiler alongside the Odd Old Man.



  6. Use one Log onto the Pot-Boiler that is on the ground to put Logs into the Grate. Then use one Jug of Vinegar on the Pot in your Inventory to get one Pot of Vinegar. Use one of Bones onto the Pot of Vinegar and then place it on the Pot-Boiler. Use your Tinderbox to light the Logs and wait until the Bones are done boiling. Once it is done, click on the Pot-Boiler to remove the Bones from the Pot and you will receive your Pot back. Repeat this until you have boiled all of the Bones.

  7. Speak to the Odd Old Man once you are finished and hand him the Bones.
Congratulations! Quest Complete!

Quest Extension for Higher Levels

  1. For those who have completed the Quest and wish to collect and clean more Bones you may do so by reading the Wish List on the large Building north of the Odd Old Man.



  2. The Bones you must collect are different from the ones that are normally dropped by these Monsters. Also note that these special types of Bones are not a 100% drop but they are not very uncommon either. To make sure that you have the correct Bone, see if you can bury it, if not, you have the correct type.



    The Bones and Locations:

  3. Please look at the list below thoroughly and take note of all of the locations then plan out the order in which to kill the Creatures in order to save time.
    Wolf (Wolf Bone): White Wolf Mountain, Arandar, Isafdar (Must have started Regicide), north of Seers Village, Kharidian Desert

    Bat (Level 6) (Bat Wing): Pathway between Varrock and Canifis.

    Rat (Level 1) (Rat Bone): Varrock Sewers, Draynor Village Dungeon, Port Sarim.

    Baby Blue Dragon (Level 48) (Baby Dragon Bone): Taverley Dungeon.

    Ogre (Level 53) (Ogre Ribs): East of Castle Wars, Feldip Hills, Gu'Tanoth.

    Jogre (Level 53) (Jogre Bone): Karamja Island (Eastern side of the River), Ardougne Zoo (Telegrab Runes required).

    Zogre (Level 44) (Zogre Bone): Jiggig southeast of Castle Wars (Brutal Arrows recommended).

    Mogre (Level 60) (Mogre Bone): Southwest of Port Sarim (Requires you to sober up Skippy the Drunk, south of Rimmington, by using a Bucket of Water, Cooked Nettle Tea (Picked Nettles with Gloves added into a Bowl of Water then cooked), and a Bucket of Milk/Chocolate Dust/Snape Grass combination, Fishing Explosives from Slayer Masters and Level 32 Slayer required).

    Dagganoth (Level 74 and 92) (Dagganoth Ribs): Lighthouse, Waterbirth Island Dungeon.

    Snake (Level 5) (Snake Spine): Karamja Island, Pollnivneach, Ardougne Zoo (Telegrab Runes required), Ape Atoll.

    Zombie (Level 13, 24, and 25) (Zombie Bone): Varrock Sewers, Entrana Dungeon, Draynor Village Dungeon, West Ardougne Graveyard.

    Werewolf (Level 24 and 88) (Werewolf Bone): Canifis (You may choose to use the Wolfbane from Priest in Peril).

    Moss Giant (Level 42) (Moss Giant Bone): Crandor Island (Must have completed Dragon Slayer), Island west of Brimhaven, west of Seers Village, Brimhaven Dungeon (Any type of Axe (Hatchet) and 875 Gold Pieces required), Varrock Sewers, Level 36 Wilderness.

    Fire Giant (Level 86) (Fire Giant Bone): Brimhaven Dungeon (Hatchet and 875 Gold Pieces required), Baxtorian Falls Dungeon (Rope and Glarial's Amulet required).

    Ice Giant (Level 53) (Ice Giant Ribs): Wilderness, White Wolf Mountain.

    Terrorbird (Level 28) (Terrorbird Wing): Tree Gnome Stronghold (Grand Tree).

    Ghoul (Level 42) (Ghoul Bone): West of Canifis' Gate to Mort Myre by the Graveyard.

    Troll (Level 69) (Troll Bone): Trollheim, Cave east of Rellekka (The Cave you enter just before the Entrance to Keldagrim).

    Seagull (Level 3) (Seagull Wing): Port Sarim on the Docks.

    Undead Cow (Level 2) (Undead Cow Ribs): Farm east of Allotment Farming Patch near Canifis.

    Experiment (Level 25) (Experiment Bone): In Dungeon from Graveyard in Creature of Fenkenstrain (Must start this Quest).

    Rabbit (Level 2) (Rabbit Bone): Isafdar (Must have started Regicide), Etceteria/Miscellania (Must have completed Fremennik Trails).

    Basilisk (Level 61) (Basilisk Bone): Slayer Dungeon east of Rellekka (Mirror Shield and Level 40 Slayer required).

    Desert Lizard (Level 42) (Desert Lizard Bone): East of Shantay Pass in the Kharidian Desert (Ice Coolers from Slayer Masters and Level 22 Slayer required, Waterskins(4) recommended).

    Cave Goblin (Level 3) (Cave Goblin Skull): Dorgeshuun Mines, Lumbridge Swamp Caves (Lantern and Spiny Helm required).

    Vulture (Level 31) (Vulture Wing): Agility Pyramid in the Kharidian Desert (Range or Magic required when Vultures are flying, Waterskins(4) recommended).

    Jackal (Level 21) (Jackal Bone): South of Pollnivneach in the Kharidian Desert (Waterskins(4) recommended).
    Boiling and Cleaning the Bones:

  4. After collecting all of the Bones, teleport to Draynor Village and purchase twenty-seven Jugs of Vinegar. To save space, pour all twenty-seven Jugs of Vinegar into twenty-seven Pots, then put the twenty-seven types of Bones into the Pots of Vinegar. Now teleport to Varrock and head to the Bank. Bring thirteen Logs, one Tinderbox, and thirteen Bones in Vinegar. You may want to bring one extra Bone in Vinegar and wield an Axe (Hatchet of any type) to cut a Tree down. Wield an Amulet of Glory or a Ring of Dueling for a quick teleportation out.

  5. Head back to the Odd Old Man and begin the boiling process. If you have brought an extra Bone in Vinegar, cut down a Tree found on the Pathway, south of the Odd Old Man. Then boil the last one. Speak to the Odd Old Man to give him the Bones. If he does not accept the Bones but it says that they will be added to the collection, use the Bones on him to give them to him instead.

  6. Bank again and withdraw the last thirteen Bones in Vinegar and thirteen Logs. Boil and clean the Bones again. Then speak to the Odd Old Man.

  7. He will then Reward you with a choice between a Ram Skull Helmet or a Bonesack.
