Fire Making Skill Guide

Firemaking is not widely considered a Skill that serves any purpose apart from one or two Quests. This however, isn't quite the truth. It can be used when Cooking and is also just a good way of raising your Skill total.

There are no restrictions on when you can start Firemaking. It can be started at any Level and done anywhere where there are trees to be cut.

So how do I start Firemaking?

You will need these Items to start your Skill:

A Tinderbox:
This is the key item because this is the only item capable of lighting things.

A Woodcutters Axe. There are Axes made of all the different Metals in Runescape, below you will find the information about each.

Black Axe 10 6
Mithril Axe 20 21
Adamant Axe 30 31
Rune Axe 40 41
Dragon Axe 60 61

Burning Logs is an easy process, all that you need to do is use your Tinderbox on your Log in your Inventory. Your Character will do the rest. When you burn your Log your Character takes one step to the west, this is why People often train Firemaking on long straight pieces of Land.
These pieces of Land can be found all over Runescape, but one of the most popular places is Seers' Village. It will not be hard to find a fellow Firemaker here.

There are several types of Wood you can burn. Below are all types of Wood and the levels to cut and burn them. The cutting and burning Experience are also given.

For more information on the location of these Trees please refer to our Woodcutting Guide.

Gnomic Firelighters:
  • Members who do a lot of Treasure Trails may come across one of these.
  • These fun little items are used to color Logs which in turn create a different colored Fire.
  • Doing so does not give an extra Experience bonus but are just for fun.
  • They are available in the colors red, blue and green.

Pyre Logs:

Members who have completed the Shades of Mort'ton Quest have access to an improved range of logs, the 'Pyre Logs'.
These are plain Logs from the table above treated with Sacred Oil, they give more Experience but are also harder to make. For more information on making Pyre Logs please refer to the Splitbark Armor Guide.
Below you will find the Levels needed to burn, the Experience and the amount of doses per Log.

Lanterns, Lamps Candles, Torches and Mobile Roasts:

Members also have access to another branch of Firemaking, the 'Light Sources'.
These are used to be able to enter certain Caves or Dark Areas.
Each of these items can be used as a Light source except the Harpie Bug Lantern, this does not supply a Light source.
  • The Lamps and Lanterns are created using a combination of the Crafting and Smithing Skills.
  • The Torch can be bought from any General Store located in the Jungle.
  • The Candles can be bought from Catherby's Candle Shop.
  • The Harpie Bug Lantern is sold by every Slayer Master.
  • The Cave Goblin Helmet is dropped by Level 11 Cave Goblin Miners in the Dorgeshuun Mines after the Lost Tribe Quest .
The Lamp Oil that is required in some Lamps/Lanterns is created by using some Swamp Tar from the Lumbridge Swamp on the tiny Still inside the Chemists House in Rimmington. When you have used the Swamp Tar on the Still simply use the Lamp/Lantern you want to fill the Still.

Below you will find a short guide on how to create each Lamp/Lantern.

Candle Lantern:

Create a Candle Lantern using the Crafting Skill and add a Lit Candle.

Oil Lamp:

Create an Oil Lamp using the Crafting Skill and add Lamp Oil to it.
After this, light it.

Oil Lantern:

Create an Oil Lamp using the Crafting Skill and an Oil Lantern Frame using the Smithing Skill.
Add the two together and add Lamp Oil. After this, light it.

Bullseye Lantern:

Create a Lantern Lens using the Crafting Skill and a Bullseye Lantern using the Smithing Skill.
Add the two together and add Lamp Oil. After this, light it.

Members can create Mobline Spitroasts to cook certain items. To make one you require 1 Iron Bar and 26 Smithing.

Sadly lighting any of these items does not give any Firemaking Experience.
However, below you will find the Firemaking Levels needed.
