Fletching is a skill used to make your own Bows, Arrows, Crossbows, Bolts and Darts. You may ask why yourself why you'd want to do that, well... The answer is quite simple: they're better and stronger than the types you can buy in a shop. Another advantage of this skill is that it is a good money maker. Fletching is a members-only skill.
At first raising this skill goes easily, but once you get a higher level, it becomes easier if you know how many things you have to fletch in order to gain yet another level. Therefore we advice you to use our Skill Calculator.
You'll be needing some materials more than others. Mainly Logs are going to be used quite a lot, so you may want to consider raising your Woodcutting level along training your Fletching skill. Other materials you'll be needing quite a lot are Feathers and Bowstrings. This table gives you an overview of what you could need:

To start shooting your arrows, you'll of course be needing a Bow. There is are many Bows available, in order to choose the best Bow available for your use, you may wish to pay a visit to our Ranged Guide.
- Make an Unstrung Bow by using a Knife on a Log and selecting a Bow.
1 × + = 1 ×
- Afterwards string the Bow with a Bow String to make your own Bow!
1 × + 1 × = 1 ×
Bowstrings can be made by using Flax on a Spinning Wheel. Flax can be picked in the Flax Field southeast of Seers' Village and in the Gnome Stronghold. Spinning Flax will give you 15 Crafting Experience (Crafting level 10 needed).

Note: in order to make the Composite Ogre Bow, you will also need to have Wolf Bones in your inventory! They are needed in the process of fletching the Bow from the Log.
With a Bow alone however, you won't be killing many foes. What you need, is ammunition! Just like Bows, there is a big variety of Arrows.
Normal Arrows:
- First use your Knife on a Log and select the Arrow Shafts (0.33 Experience per Shaft).
1 × + = 15 ×
- Use Feathers on the Arrow Shafts to make Headless Arrows (1 Experience per Shaft).
1 × + 1 × = 1 ×
- To finish the Arrows, use some Arrowheads on the Headless Arrows.
1 × + 1 × = 1 ×

Ogre and Brutal Arrows: (Requires completion of the Big Chompy Bird Hunting Quest)
These are slightly different to make:
First use a Knife on an Achey Log and choose to make Arrow Shafts (1.6 Experience per Shaft). 1 × + = 2~6 ×
Use Feathers on the Arrow Shafts (you'll need four Feathers for each Shaft) to turn them into Flighted Ogre Arrows (0.9 Experience per Shaft). 1 × + 4 × = 1 ×
-
Get Wolf Bones by killing any kind of Wolf and use a Chisel on them to turn them into Wolfbone Arrow Tips (2.5 Experience per Shaft) 1 × + = 2~6 ×
OR
Smith yourself some Nails to create Brutal Arrows (requires completion of the Zogre Flesh Eaters Quest). 1 × on Anvil + = 15 ×
- Use the Arrow Tips on the Flighted Ogre Arrows to create your Ogre Arrows
1 × + 1 × = 1 ×

If you wish to have more power, the Dwarves have used their cunning knowledge of mechanics in order to create the Crossbow. Such power however does have a drawback: you are unable to wear a shield at the same time.
A crossbow has two parts: a Stock and Limbs. Only the combinations described in the table work!
First we make our Stock, make sure you are choosing a type of wood of which you make the Limbs as well! 1 × + = 1 ×
Next we make our Crossbow Limbs by Smithing a Metal Bar. 1 × on anvil + = 1 ×
Now we combine both parts while having a Hammer in our inventory to get an Unstrung Crossbow 1 × + 1 × = 1 ×
Without string we won't be shooting a lot of bolts, so we'll have to create a string tougher than a Bowstring: A Crossbow String based on Sinew. We get Sinew by cooking Beef (so from a Cow) or Bear Meat. 1 × on range = 1 ×
To turn the Sinew into a Crossbow String, we simply have to use it on a Spinning Wheel 1 × on Spinning Wheel = 1 ×
As final touch, we only have to put the Crossbow String on the Unstrung Crossbow. 1 × + 1 × = 1 ×

* You can only get Blurite Ore after finishing the Knight's Sword Quest.
Okay, enough Crossbow making. Now we move to the bolts! The basic bolts will do some damage already, but you can also enchant most of those darts once they are gem-tipped - making the use of Crossbows quite a bit more interesting.
The Basic Bolts:
First we'll be needing to smith our bolts, just use a Bar on an Anvil while having a Hammer in your inventory - just like you'd always do when you smith. 1 × on anvil + = 10 ×
Then we only need to add Feathers so we can actually use these bolts in our crossbows in which you will get your Fletching Experience. 1 × + 1 × = 1 ×

Enhancements:
Now that you have a regular bolt, you may wish to make it more powerful (who wouldn't?). This is perfectly possible by adding tips to the bolts.
First we have to make our Tip. There are several tips, so there are some differences in obtaining them:
Afterwards we simply add the tip to the bolt. Not all combinations are possible though! Check out the table below to see which combinations are allowed. 1 × + 1 × = 1 ×
