Hit Points: An Overview Hit Points is quite possibly the easiest Skill to understand. Commonly called "HP", your Hit Points are, simply put, your health. The first number of the Skill is your current HP, and the last number is your maximum HP. Most of the time, you want to keep your HP as high as possible, because bad things can happen if you don't! Death ![]() When your HP goes down to zero, your character dies. Dying will send you back to Lumbridge Castle, and you'll only keep the three most valuable Items you currently have. (But take note that each Item's "value" is calculated by Runescape's General Store prices! For instance, Party Hats only sell in General Stores for one Gold Piece, so if you die you'll keep that 20 Gold Pieces Lobster Cage instead!) However, attacking someone in the Wilderness or entering the Abyss will "skull" you. In this case, you'll have a little skull and crossbones over your Head for approximately twenty minutes. If you die while you're "skulled", you'll won't keep any Items at all! A little bit of help here can come from the Prayer Protect Item. If Protect Item is on, you'll keep four Items when you die instead of three. If you're "skulled", you'll keep your one most valuable Item. Healing your HP There are three ways to heal your HP--automatically, with the help of Prayer, and with Food. Healing HP automatically Every 60 seconds, all Skills (except for Prayer) go one Level towards what they are supposed to be. For instance, say you drink an Agility Potion. Now you're 43/40 Agility. Sixty seconds later, you're 42/40 Agility. Likewise, if you drink a Beer, you'll go down a few Levels in Attack, which gradually return. Hit Points is no different. You'll automatically regain one HP every minute. Healing HP with Prayer The Level 22 Prayer is called "Rapid Heal". When you turn on Rapid Heal, your automatic restore time of HP is cut in half--so you'll gain one HP every 30 seconds instead of every 60 seconds! Healing HP with Food Many People use Food to heal their Hit Points. Every Food acts differently--the amount of HP restored varies with whatever it is you're eating. Foods range from simple Cooked Meat (heals 3) to the widely-used Lobster (heals 12) to the elusive Manta Ray (heals 22). Be careful, though--not all Foods are eaten in one bite. Although Cakes also heal twelve HP, they must be eaten three times, each time restoring four. You can find a list of how much each Food heals in the Cooking Skill section of Jagex's online Manual, or in Runevillage's own Cooking Skill Guide, here. Things that affect your Hit Points, or vice-versa Poison ![]() Poison is one of Runescape's several status effects. Poisoned Spears and Poisoned Daggers are the most widely-used Poisonous Weapons, although it is possible to add Poison to other things as well, such as Arrows. The amount of damage the Poison does can depend on the Weapon used to Poison you. When you become Poisoned, you'll see a green 'damage splat' every few seconds. This damage is caused by the Poison. It's like having two People battle you at once--your attacker, and the Poison status. If left alone, the Poison will slowly whittle itself down and disappear, usually doing damage such as "4-4-4-4-3-3-3-3-2-2-2-2-1-1-1-1". Poison can be cured with an Anti-Poison Potion or a Super Anti-Poison Potion. The Super Anti-Poison, while curing the Poison you already have, will also protect you from getting Poisoned again for a little while. The Ring of Life ![]() ![]() The enchanted Diamond Ring is known as the Ring of Life. If you have it equipped, and your HP goes below 10% without you dying, you'll automatically be Teleported to Lumbridge. This can be very useful if you have a bad connection--if you're about to be killed but can't control your Character due to lag or something else. Beware, though! In the above picture, 10% of my HP is 7/73. Let’s say I have 8 HP left and then take 8 damage from an Enemy in one Hit, I would die anyway as that single Hit exceeded my HP! Dharok the Wretched's Barrows Set When the entire Dharok the Wretched set is equipped (Helm, Platebody, Platelegs, and Greataxe,) your Strength is influenced by your Hit Points! Jagex's Manual states: "The lower the player's Hit Points the greater their strength." Around 10-20% HP, Players can hit double what they usually can! Be careful, though--at 10% HP, you run the risk of dying and losing all that great power. An in-depth Barrows Guide can be found here. Brimhaven Agility Arena Many People go to the Brimhaven Agility Arena to get their Agility Level up, and there's a rule of thumb there that may help you out. If you get caught in the Traps at, say, 70 HP, the Traps will do around 6-7 damage each time! But if you get yourself down to around 20 HP, the Traps will only do 2-3 damage. So in short, it's better to keep your Hit Points low when in the Agility Arena--your Food will last longer. You can find more about the Brimhaven Agility Arena here. Guthix's Rest ![]() Guthix's Rest is a special type of Tea you can make after completing the One Small Favour Quest. To make it, start with an empty Teacup. These can be obtained by stealing or buying a Cup of Tea from the Tea Seller in the Southeast part of Varrock. Fill a normal Bowl with Water, and then heat the Water. Pour the Water into the Teacup, and add one Harralander, 2 Guam Leaves, and 1 Marrentill to the Mix. The Drink will become Guthix's Rest(3). If you drink a dose of your Guthix's Rest, you'll regain five HP. But if you drink it when you have full HP, you'll go 5 over your maximum! Take advantage of this quickly, because every minute, your HP goes back towards its regular limit like any other Skill. |
