Melee Combat Guide

Melee Combat is the most popular form of Combat. It involves three main Skills: Attack, Strength, and Defense as well as raising Hit Points. Melee is used effectively for fighting all Creatures, completing Quests, Dueling, and Player Killing.

All three Styles can be Trained independently or together. It is suggested that you Train all three of them at similar paces, as focusing on only one will not provide sufficient Experience and Ability.

Attack

Attack determines how often you can hit your Opponent (Accuracy) with a Melee Attack. The higher your Attack is; the more likely you will hit them.

Attack can be considered one of the most important Melee Skills, second only to Strength in the Wilderness, and topping the list for Dueling.

Your Attack Level also determines what types of Weapons you can wield:

  Metal Attack Level Required
Bronze Weapons 1
Iron Weapons 1
Steel Weapons 5
Black Weapons 10
Mithril Weapons 20
Adamant Weapons 30
Runite Weapons 40
Dragonite Weapons 60

There are several temporary ways to boost your Attack. You can either boost its Level with Potions, or boost its Rating with other Equipment.

Training Attack:

There are currently only two ways to Train Attack:
  1. Using "Controlled" Mode with a Melee Weapon (1.33 Experience per damage inflicted)

  2. Using "Accurate" Mode with a Melee Weapon (four Experience damage inflicted)
In order to Train Attack quickly and effectively you need to be able to inflict a lot of damage often. Which with the current ways to Train requires a high Strength Level. It is recommended to Train Attack almost evenly with Strength. Defense is also important for Leveling Strength as it lets you fight higher Level Opponents that can do some damage to you.

Strength

Strength determines how hard you can hit your Opponent (maximum damage) with Melee Attacks.

Strength can be considered one of the most important Melee Skills, especially in the Wilderness.

Unlike Attack, only one Item is dependent on your Strength Level. Members with a Strength Level of 50 or above are capable of wearing a "Granite Shield".

There are several temporary ways to boost your Strength. You can either boost its Level with Potions/Specials, or boost its Rating with Amulets and other Equipment.

Training Strength:

Strength is the most often Trained Skill in Melee Combat. There are currently two ways to Train Strength:
  1. Using "Controlled" Mode with a Melee Weapon (1.33 Experience per damage inflicted)

  2. Using "Aggressive" Mode with a Melee Weapon (four Experience per damage inflicted)
Like Attack, Strength is not affective alone. As Strength only affects how much damage you inflict, not how often you inflict it, you need Attack to make Strength effective. This goes for Training as well as Player Killing, Questing and Dueling. Similarly to Attack, a decent Defense Level will allow you to Train against higher Level Foes.

Defense

Defense determines how often your Opponent will hit you (NOT how hard they will hit you - so think of it as dodge if you must). Defense guards against Melee (most effectively with Armor), Range, and some Magic (a high Magic Level also provides additional defense from Magic).

Defense is one of the most important (yet neglected) Skills in Runescape. It is one of the biggest factors to survival. Defense is also one of the most versatile Melee Skills, as your Defense protects you whether you are using Melee, Range or Mage. This makes Defense more important than Strength and Attack in some ways.

Your Defense Level also determines what types of Armor you can wear:

Training Defense:

There are currently three ways to Train Defense:
  1. Using "Controlled" Mode with a Melee Weapon (1.33 Experience per damage inflicted)

  2. Using "Defensive" Mode with a Melee Weapon (four Experience per damage inflicted)

  3. Using "Long Range" Mode with a Longbow (two Experience per damage inflicted)
When Training Defense with Melee, it is necessary to have high Attack and Strength as Defense will not help you inflict damage, but the Experience for it is based on damage you inflict. To raise Defense you need Strength and Attack or Range Levels that will allow you to deal out the necessary damage.

Hit Points

Your Hit Points, also known as just "hits" or "hp" are, like Defense, part of all Combat. Also, like Defense, most Players raise them mainly using Melee. Your Hit Points control how much damage you can take before you die, in other words, your Health. When an Enemy hits you, damage is displayed above your Character in the form of a Number. The Number is subtracted from your total hits, and when your total reaches zero you are dead. To raise your total Number of Hit Points you must raise your Hit Points Level. The Level and the amount of hits you have are the same.

To raise your hits any fighting Style can be used. No matter what Style you are using, 1.33 Experience per damage inflicted will go toward your hits Level.
