Introduction

The World of Mining includes a great many things. You can mine Clay, Adamantite or even Runite if you put your mind to it. Mining is also a great Money making Skill because it supplies Smithers with the Ore and Bars they need. This Guide will teach you how to mine, make Money while mining and to get to that big accomplishment of high-Level Mining.

Iron
15 35 All the Mines contain iron ore except for the following mines:
  • Mining Guild
  • Coal Trucks
  • Lumbridge Swamp Mine
  • Hero's Guild
  • Barbarian Village
  • Varrock East Mine
  • Many Wilderness Mines
Iron is used for Iron Bars, Steel Bars, and power-mining. Iron is one of the most abundent rocks in Runescape. Iron ore has the highest demand besides coal. Iron Rocks respawn every three seconds.
Silver
20 35
  • North Shilo Village Mine
  • Skeleton Mine
  • Scorpion Pit
  • Varrock West Mine
  • Crafting Guild
  • Grand Tree Mine
Silver Rocks respawn much slower than Iron. It takes about one minute for a Rock to respawn its Ore. Silver takes time to get at Level 20 but if you find a determined Crafter, the pay is well worth it. Silver is usually made into bars, then used with a mold and furnace to make tiaras or holy symbols.
Coal
30 50
  • North Shilo Village Mine
  • Skeleton Mine
  • Scorpion Pit
  • Varrock West Mine
  • Crafting Guild
  • Grand Tree Mine
Coal is the most plentiful Rock in the Game. Most Miners mine this Ore for Money and Experience. Coal can be found in almost EVERY Mine except for some in the Wilderness. Coal is in high demand so most Miners tend to group together in Mines and it gets crowded. Coal is used for Steel bars all the way to Rune bars, so are in a very high demand.
Gold
30 65
  • Crafting Guild
  • Scorpion Pit
  • Rimmington Mine
  • Dwarven Mine
  • Grand Tree Mine
  • Rimmington Mine
  • Skeleton Mine
Most of the above Mines contain one or two Gold Rocks and the Grand Tree Mine, Dwarven Mine and the Scorpion Pit are near Banks. The Crafting Guild has seven Gold Rocks and is by far the best mining spot for Gold. Gold rocks respawn about every 60 seconds.
Mithril
55 80
  • Mining Guild
  • Dwarven Mine
  • Lumbridge Swamp Mine
  • Grand Tree Mine
  • Many Wilderness locations and other Mines.
Mithril rocks respawn about every 105 seconds (1 minute and 45 seconds). Mithril ore is only used with Coal for Mithril Bars.
Adamantite
70 95
  • Dwarven Mine
  • Grand Tree Mine
  • Hero's Guild Mine
  • Lumbridge Swamp Mine
  • Scorpion Pit
  • Varrock East Mine
  • North Shilo Village Mine
  • Hobgoblin Mine
  • Pirate House Mine
Adamantite ore is solely used for Adamantite bars (6 Coal and 1 Adamantite ore) It respawns every 210 seconds (3 minutes and 30 seconds).
Runite
85 125
  • Hero's Guild
  • Neitiznot and Jatizso
  • Wilderness Runite Mines
Runite ore is very valuable, but hard to get. Many Player Killers camp at the Wilderness Mine, where only 2 rune rocks exist. The rocks respawn every 10 minutes, also causing the ore to be harder to get..

Strategy Mining

This section will teach you how to Level up your Mining Level. There are two ways to do this at almost every Level. Power-Mining or regular mining. Power-Mining is harder in RS2 since you cannot mine when your Inventory is full. So you now have to either Bank the Ore or drop them. Regular mining is mining a full Inventory and Banking the Ore so you can smith them or sell them.

New Miners (1-15)

You want to Level up your Mining Skill but you're only at Level 1. There are three Ore that you can mine. I recommend mining Copper and Tin. It will take you around 140 Copper or Tin Ore to get you to Level 15 Mining. Mine 70 Copper and 70 Tin for best results. Then you can smith the Ore you mine for 70 Bronze Bars. You could just mine and drop the Ore but it isn't recommended since 140 Ore will only take 20 minutes and it gives an added plus of a couple of Smithing Levels and a bit of cash. On the other hand Clay will take much longer so Copper or Tin is the best way to get Level 15 Mining and the ability to mine Iron.

Low Leveled Miners (15-30)

At Level 15 Mining you can mine Iron Ore. You may not get it every time but it is your best choice to raise your Mining Level. About 275 Iron Ore are needed to get you to Level 30 Mining. When your Smithing Level is high enough you can smith the Iron Ore into Bars.

Medium Leveled Miners (30-55)

Now you're at Level 30 Mining, you can make some Money by mining and Banking all your Coal. 3,070 Coal is needed to get to Level 55 Mining. This may take a lot of time so I recommend splitting it up like so. Mine 1,100 Iron and 2,200 Coal. This way you will save some time and you can smith the Ore into 1,100 Steel Bars, which sell very well. You can even Level up your Smithing by making the Bars into Steel Objects. Another way is to mine Iron Ore the whole time and power-mine it.

Skilled Miners (55-70)

You can now mine Mithril Ore. The following are ways to get to Level 60 Mining.
  • Mine 1,339 Mithril Ore (can take very long)
  • Mine 2,143 Coal Ore (can take long)
  • Mine 3,061 Iron Ore (recommended if you're power-mining)
  • After Level 60 Mining is achieved, go straight to the Mining Guild. Mine Coal there until Level 70. 9,273 Coal is needed. Or you can power-mine there with 13,254 Iron Ore. At Level 60 Mining, it is best to stay in the Mining Guild since there are many Coal Rocks and some Mithril Rocks. In my opinion, the best way to get to Level 70 is to mine a combination of Mithril and Coal Ore so that you can smith them later on.

High Leveled Miners (70-85)

You can now mine Adamantite Ore. Adamantite is not found that much and should not be mined a lot since it will take long to get to Level 85 mining that way. A combination of Iron and Coal, Mithril and Coal or Adamantite and Coal are the best way to Level up both mining and Smithing. Iron and Coal is recommended for faster mining while Mithril and Coal are recommended for selling. You should get some combat Levels now since most of your mining will be done in the Wilderness.

Master Miners (85-99)

If you want to attain the ultimate Level 99 Mining it is hard in RS2 so listen up. Runite Ore can be mined now and is recommended for Money making mining. Most Miners just power-mine to Level 99 since it is the easiest way. So I recommend you drop the Ore you mine and repeat the process until the high Level 99 Mining.

Money Making Mining

It is fairly easy to make Money while mining. Coal is the best-sold product of Mining but Iron is also up there. I would wait until Level 30 Mining to start raking in the big bucks. From then mine Iron and/or Coal. If you can smith the Coal and Iron together and make Steel Bars. These sell fairly high and provide decent mining and smithing Experience. When both of these Levels get higher move onto Mithril and Adamantite Bars. Finally, you can sell Runite Ore for around 10,000 each and the Bars sell for much more than that. IF you can find a Level 99 Smither get them to smith you some Rune Legs or Plates and sell those for 55,000-75,000 for the biggest profit. Other ways of mining is for contract jobs. Meaning if someone hires you to mine them a specific amount of any Ore. This is a great opportunity since you know you can find a Buyer and won't waste time in Varrock trying to sell your Products. Just remember to have fun and wait for the good Buyers instead of selling low.

Other Ore

With the new RuneScape comes another mining Material, Rune Essence. Each Essence gives 5 Experience and you only click the Rock once. It fills up your Inventory and it never has to respawn. It is slow mining but is worth it if you can sell the Essence or if you can Runecraft them.

Blurite is a Quest Material needed for The Knight's Sword Quest. It can only be found in the Dungeon below the Dwarf's House and needs Level 10 Mining. 14.5 Experience each time it is mined and it respawns very quickly. It is non-tradable and you cannot smith it.

Gems

Gems can be obtained from normal Rocks and Gem Rocks. Gem Rocks give Gems on every swing (when you hit it) and are Members Only in Shilo Village. Otherwise you get a Gem every once in a while when you are mining. Wearing an Amulet Of Glory, gives you a higher chance of getting a Gem. Dragonstone cannot be obtained from either Gem Rocks or regular Rocks.

Pickaxes

Listed below are the different pickaxes used to mine. These can be purchased from Nurmof, who's store is in the Dwarven Mine. The more swings, the higher the chance to get the Ore. Runite is the best Pickaxe available.

Bronze 1 1 1 Gold Pieces
Iron 4 2 140 Gold Pieces
Steel 6 4 500 Gold Pieces
Mithril 21 6 1,300 Gold Pieces
Adamantite 31 9 3,200 Gold Pieces
Runite 41 12 32,000 Gold Pieces

Random Events

To decrease the number of autoers, Jagex has added Random Events. Some of them can reward you, some of them can kill you. Here's a list of the random events that are capable of happening while mining.

Rock Golem Attacks are based on your Combat Level, kill it or run away
Swarm of Bees If you stand in one place too long they will attack you. You have to run away, (they are not killable).
Mysterious Old Man Can just appear whenever. Just talk to him and receive a Gift or be teleported away if you ignore him too long.
Gas Explosion Blows your Pickaxe up. Head to the Dwarven Mine (just a bit south of the Ice Mountain) and locate the Dwarf Nurmof, who can repair your Pickaxe, (It generally costs about 1,100 Gold Pieces to have it fixed).
Tool Separation ”Quickly” locate where the Head of your Pickaxe went and pick it up. Be sure the handle is also in your Inventory and use one with the other to reconnect them.
Genie Appears for no apparent reason and gives you a Lamp, “Rub” it and a message appears for you to chose which Skill you would like free Experience in. The amount of Experience you receive varies as to which Skill you choose.
Strange Plant Starts growing from most anything, anywhere. Just pick the Fruit when it's ripe or you can get poisoned. When you eat the Fruit you gain 20% of your 'run' energy.
Drunken Dwarf Appears whenever and wherever he comes out of his stuppor long enough to honor you with his his drunken presence. Talk to him and receive a Beer and a Kebab or get hurt by his Fireball when he gets mad.

Prospecting

If you see a Rock and you don't know what it is, simply left click it and press “Prospect”. After a while you will see a message stating what is in the Rock. If nothing is in the Rock or it has not respawned you will not find any Ore.
