What is Ranged?
Ranged is one of the Combat Skills in Runescape, and can be used to defeat every Monster in Runescape that I know of, from long or short distances, which can prove very helpful when killing a high Level Monster or Player. Ranged is very powerful against Mage and Melee Opponents.
The Road to Ranging
To begin your Quest to be the best Ranger, you must first buy a Bow and some Arrows from any of the Archery Stores located in Runescape. ( Note: If you are a Free Player there is only one Store in Varrock available to you.) Then wield your Bow and Arrows simply by clicking on them if they're in your Inventory. You are then ready to go. Choose an Opponent to Battle with by clicking on it and you will see your Character reaching to grab an Arrow from his/her Quiver, then you will see the Arrow being launched at the Opponent. You may want to find an Obstacle or some Barrier to hide behind so that you don’t take damage from it’s returned attack. You should be able to shoot over or around the Obstacle, if you can't find an Obstacle, it’s wise to bring some Food. When you are killing your Opponent, your Arrows will fall to the Floor. Some will be broken beyond repair and will simply vanish. You are the only Person who can see the Arrows for a short while. After that, they appear for everyone, so be careful! People might steal them from you!
Shortbow vs. Longbow
It has been debated for a long time whether the Longbow or the Short is better. Here are some facts that will help you to make your decision.
The Shortbow, although it is fast, does not have the Range of the Longbow. Because of which the Longbow is the most powerful. Sure the Shortbow can fling out Arrows at a rapid pace and the Longbow shoots slightly less, but more accurately and over a longer distance.
I believe the Shortbow is best for close Combat and the Long is an all out power Weapon meant for flinging Rune Arrows at Player Killers from long distances. Both Bows give the same Attack Bonuses and it all narrows down to what you’re Ranged Skill Level is. If it is high the Longbow is something for you, if it is low the Shortbow gives faster Experience
Ranging Styles:

- Accurate - This Option shoots Arrows at a moderate pace and with every hit that you make on your Opponent you will gain Ranged and Hit Point Experience.
- Rapid - Shoots Arrows at a high rate of speed often missing and wasting more Arrows but it also provides excellent Experience when you have a decent Ranged Level, with each hit you make you receive Ranged and Hit Points Experience.
- Long-Range - This is the slowest of all the Options but with this setting you have the ability to shoot at long distances which can prove quite handy in certain situations with each hit you make you receive Ranged Hit Point and Defense Experience.
- Special - This feature is only available on the Members Servers and only with the Magic Bows. When you click the Special Bar your Character will perform the Special Attack. For the Longbow one Super Charged Arrow will fly out, faster than normal and with a guaranteed Hit. For the Shortbow two Super Charged Arrows will fly out, very fast, but they often miss and waste your precious Special Attack.

Darts, Javelins, and Throwing Axes:
This is a section to show the Rangers all of the other Projectile Weapons they have at their disposal.
You must have completed the Tourist Trap Quest in order to make Darts. Each Bar of Metal you choose will be made into ten Dart Heads. When you click then all you have to do is attach Feathers to the end of them and you have darts that you can toss at Monsters. Darts can be poisoned, and they are wielded as a Weapon so you may wear a Shield if you like for extra protection. Darts are very fast and dangerous when put on rapid and I would prefer to Range with these all of the time but they are a bit of trouble to make.
- Bronze Dart -

- Iron Dart -

- Steel Dart -

- Mithril Dart -

- Adamant Dart -

- Rune Dart -

Throwing Knives are also just like Darts, deadly and can be Poisoned. They are wielded like a Weapon and you're also able to hold a Shield if you like. Knives are overall more powerful I believe, but they are even more difficult to get a hold of because you only make five per Bar so I'd stick with Darts if you decide to abandon the Bow and Arrows.
Javelins on the other hand are slow but they pack a punch, I find them to be a bit expensive for this reason but I have never found any faults with them other than the slowness. These are not available for Smithing. But are dropped by many Monsters, and can be bought in the Ranging Guild.
Throwing Axes are very nice to look at but i don't find them to be of much use. At the Price they sell for you would be better off trying to buy Rune Arrows. Even though the Rune Throwing Axe does have a Special move I don’t find that it’s worth the effort. As you can see there is a wide selection of Ranged Weapons you can use to inflict Damage, Death and Destruction, but I would suggest you stick with the traditional Bow and Arrows unless you have some cash to spend.
- Leather Armor:
- This is the Soft Leather Cowl, worn on the Head for protection.
- This is the Soft Leather Coif, worn on the Head and offers more protection than the Cowl.
- These are the Soft Leather Chaps, worn around the Legs for protection.
- This is the Soft Leather Chest (Body), worn for protection of the Torso.
- Worn around Wrists.
- This is the Soft Leather Gloves, worn for protection of the Hands.

- This is the Hardened Leather Body, slightly better protection of the Torso.
- This is the Studded Chaps. Steel Studs are added to Hardened Leather offering still greater protection for the Legs.
- This is the Studded Body, offering greater protection for the Chest.

- Dragon Armor:
Dragon armor provides excellent protection from all types of Attacks, and is ideal for Rangers. You must have completed the Dragon Slayer Quest and meet the following Level requirements.

- Dwarf Multi-Cannon:
The Cannon is the most interesting Ranging Weapon there is. It can provide the best Experience in just thirty Minutes that you could ever ask for . The Cannon is hated in places like the Fire Giant Pit because of the fact it Attacks all available Foes and can be quite annoying.
The Cannon however, is not cheap at all, it will set you back a huge 750,000 Gold Pieces when bought from the Dwarf after finishing the Dwarven Cannon Quest. Then to provide Ammo for this beast you must have an Cannon Ball Mold and use a Steel Bar with a Furnace to receive Cannon Balls; one Steel Bar = four Cannon Balls., another annoyance is that it takes long periods of time to Craft Cannon Balls.
The Cannon will hold thirty Rounds of Ammo at a time when shooting at Foes you will have to refill it with Ammo every once and a while. The maximum Hit from a Cannon that I have seen was a 32. (Note: The Cannon cannot be used to kill other Players in the Wilderness.) The Cannon will vanish after about an Hour of constant usage, so just go talk to the engineer again to get another one for free.

Recommended Training Areas:
- Level 1 - 25:
I would suggest the Cows in Lumbridge using Bronze Arrows and the best Bow you can so you will retrieve more of your Arrows.
- Level 25 - 40:
The Guards in Edgeville are great for this Level so I would highly recommend these. Just close the Gate and shoot them through it, then collect your Loot and Arrows and keep going.
- Level 40 - 50:
OK for this Level I found that the King Lathas Training Grounds was very good. To gain Entrance to this Area you must do the Biohazard Quest.
- Level 50 - 60:
Again, the Training Grounds are your best bet until you get to Level 55, then move to the Fire Giants with Steel Arrows or higher for better Loot and Experience.
- Level 60 - 80:
The Blue Dragons in the Ogre Cave of Yanille, or the Taverley Members Dungeon, are a great way to Train and make Money but if you are looking for only Experience then stay with the Fire Giants as they will aid you in you Quest to become the top Ranger.
- Level 80 - 99:
Train in the Wilderness against other Players as this will benefit you a lot or there's still King Lathas Training Grounds. Black Dragons are going to be good for Cash and Loot too so keep that in mind.
Free Area Ranging Spots for Levels 40 - 99:
I did not post many Ranging Spots for Free Players because I gained most of my Levels on Members’ Servers. I hear the Hobgoblin Peninsula is good for Free Players, another great place is Training on Guards in Varrock and Falador, and Black Knights at the Black Knight Tower.
