Have you ever worried about the low amount of Runes in your Bank Inventory? Here's the solution: make the Runes yourself!
It isn't so hard to get the craftsmanship you need to make some Air Runes, but are you tough enough to train yourself up so you can make your own Death Runes? All the information you need lies ahead in this Guide.

The raw materials which you'll be using all the time when Runecrafting are Rune Essences. There are two versions in these, the regular Rune Essence and the Pure Rune Essence.

Regular:  and Pure:

If you have a Mining Level lower than 30, you'll be making the regular Rune Essences, but once you’ve leveled up to Level 30 and you're Pay-To-Play, you'll be mining Pure Rune Essences!

What's the difference between these Rune Essence types you might wonder. Well, they are quite similar, the only difference is that the regular Rune Essences can only be used to make the Runes you have in the Free-To-Play World. The Pure Rune Essences can be turned into any Rune.

Where can you mine these Rune Essences? You'll first have to complete the Rune Mysteries Quest. As a reward you'll get your first Talisman ever: the Air Talisman.
There is only one place to mine Rune Essences, the Rune Essence Mine. To access it, you'll need to be teleported by someone, the Persons who can teleport you are:
  • The Wizard in Wizard Tower Basement
  • Aubury in the Varrock Magic Shop (Closest Bank for Free-To-Play)
  • The Wizard in Ardougne (The one who is part of the Tribal Totem Quest)
  • Gnome in the Cave at the Gnome Stronghold, southwest of the Grand Tree
  • The Wizard in the Magic Guild (Closest Bank for Pay-To-Play)
To mine these Essence, simply click on one of the large Pillars made of Gray Stone.
Note: You need a Pickaxe to mine the Essences, just like mining the Bronze Pickaxe is the slowest, the Rune Pickaxe the fastest.

Runes out of one Essence: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Experience Given: 5.5/Essence
Talisman Obtained From: Imps (Level 2), Wizards (Level 6 and 9) and Dark Wizards (Level 20).

Picture of Talisman:

Extra Information: There is a faster route to the Mind Ruins through Level 1-4 Wilderness

Walkway to the Altar:

      Water Runes

Runecrafting Level: 5 19 38 57 76 95
Runes out of one Essence: 1 2 3 4 5 6

Experience Given: 6/Essence
Talisman Obtained From: Wizards (Level 6 and 9) and Dark Wizards (Level 20)

Picture of Talisman:

Extra Information: Traveling from the Wizard's Tower (Essence Teleporter) to the Water Ruins and back is a fast way for Free-To-Play Players to make Water Runes. There is also a faster route to the Bank through the Lost City, but it requires a Dramen Staff, (Lost City Quest, Members-Only)

Walkway to the Altar:

      Earth Runes

Runecrafting Level: 9 26 52 78
Runes out of one Essence: 1 2 3 4

Experience Given: 6.5/Essence
Talisman Obtained From: Man (Level 2), Woman (Level 2), Wizards (Level 6 and 9), Dark Wizards (Level 20), Al Kharid Warriors (Level 9), Rogues, Vampires, Lesser Demons (Level 82) and Greater Demons (Level 92).

Picture of Talisman:

Extra Information: Going from Aubury (Essence Teleporter) to the Earth Ruins is the fastest way to get Experience for Free-To-Play. This can be used in conjunction with the nearby Bank.

This is the second-best way to train your Runecrafting if you are Free-To-Play.
The best use for these Runes later on would be for the "Crumble Undead" spell, which can best be used on high-level undead creatures like the Ankous in the Stronghold of Security.

Walkway to the Altar:

      Fire Runes

Runecrafting Level: 14 35 70
Runes out of one Essence: 1 2 3

Experience Given: 7/Essence
Talisman Obtained From: Dark Wizards (Level 20), Skeletons (Level 18 and Level 20) and Guards (Level 21).

Picture of Talisman:

Extra Information: Report says that the Dueling Arena Bank is further away from the Ruins than the Al Kharid Bank. Also, a lot of People are saying that making Fire Runes gets you the fastest Experience

This is the fastest way for Members to gain Runecrafting Experience:
  1. Start at Castle Wars:

  2. Put on (wield) a Ring of Dueling with at least two charges, it’s not relevant what Armor or Weapons you’re wielding.
  3. From the Bank, withdraw your Fire Talisman and 27 Rune Essence.
  4. ‘Rub’ your Ring of Dueling and teleport to the Dueling Arena.
  5. Proceed west to the Mysterious Ruins and enter.
  6. Left Click on the Altar thus binding the Essence into Fire Runes.
  7. ‘Rub’ the Ring of Dueling and teleport back to Castle Wars.
  8. Repeat this procedure from Step 2 as many times as needed to acquire the Skill Level you wish.
Note: This uses a lot of Rings of Dueling so it’s probably best to acquire a large supply prior to starting this process so it can be completed quickly.

Walkway to the Altar:

      Body Runes

Runecrafting Level:204692
Runes out of one Essence:123

Experience Given: 7.5/Essence
Talisman Obtained From: Guards (Level 21), Wizards (Level 6 and 9), Dark Wizards (Level 20) and Hill Giants (Level 28).

Picture of Talisman:

Extra Information: This type of Rune is the best Free-To-Play can make. Making Body Runes gives great Experience, but they are next to useless because you can only use it to do "Weaken" and "Curse" on monsters...

Walkway to the Altar:

      Cosmic Runes

Runecrafting Level:2759
Runes out of one Essence:12

Experience Given: 8/Essence
Talisman Obtained From: Black Demons (Level 172), Lesser Demons (Level 82), Mysterious Old Man, Casket from Fishing and Otherworldly Beings.

Picture of Talisman:

Extra Information: Making Cosmic Runes is a very good way to get Runecrafting Experience and pretty good way for getting Money for Members, however, it requires a Dramen Staff (Lost City Quest, Members-Only). Pure Essences are required to bind to the Altar. Rune Essences will not work.

Walkway to the Altar:

      Chaos Runes

Runecrafting Level:3574
Runes out of one Essence:12

Experience Given: 8.5/Essence
Talisman Obtained From: Fire Giants (Level 86), Lesser Demons (Level 82), Mysterious Old Man, Shadow Warriors (Level 48), Black Demons (Level 172), Hill Giants (Level 28), Otherworldly Beings, Chaos Druids (Level 13), Skeletons (Level 45) and Hobgoblins (Level 42).

Picture of Talisman:

Extra Information: To access the Chaos Ruins you need to go to Level 9 Wilderness, plus navigate a horrendous Maze. An Amulet of Glory is highly recommended for the return journey. Pure Essences are required to bind to the Altar. Rune Essences will not work.

After finishing the
What Lies Below? Quest, you are able to take another route to the Altar, not through the Wilderness. Go through the East gate of Varrock and follow the path to the North until you get to the statue which you'll have to enter.

Walkway to the Altar:

      Astral Runes

Runecrafting Level:4082
Runes out of one Essence:12

Experience Given: 8.7/Essence
Talisman Obtained From: No Talisman is required to access the Astral Runes Altar.

Picture of Talisman: Not available.

Extra Information: You must have completed the
Lunar Diplomacy Quest to access the Altar. You must also be wearing a Seal of Passage (can be obtained from Brundt the Chieftain in Relleka) to access the Bank, or you will be sent back to Relleka. There are no Ruins that need to be entered and, therefore, there is no Talisman. Simply walk up to the Altar and click on it to bind your Pure Essence. There are level 111 Suqahs that patrol the area west of the Altar, so wear Armor if your Defense level is low.

Walkway to the Altar:

      Nature Runes

Runecrafting Level:4491
Runes out of one Essence:12

Experience Given: 9/Essence
Talisman Obtained From: Moss Giants (Level 42), Chaos Druids (Level 13), Hobgoblins (Level 28), Green Dragons (Level 79) and Ice Warriors (Level 57).

Picture of Talisman:

Extra Information: The obvious route is through Shilo Village (Requires
Shilo Village Quest completion, Members-Only). A less obvious, but better way to make Nature Runes is actually through Gnome Airlines (Requires Grand Tree Quest completion, Members-Only). Pure Essences are required to bind to the Altar. Rune Essences will not work.

Walkway to the Altar:

      Law Runes

Runecrafting Level:54
Runes out of one Essence:1

Experience Given: 9.5/Essence
Talisman Obtained From: the
Troll Stronghold Quest.

Picture of Talisman:

Extra Information: As it is a Quest Reward, the Talisman is not tradable. The Altar is on Entrana, so the routes are from Draynor Bank or Falador Bank. To speed things up from Falador you can bring Water and Air Runes to Teleport with your freshly made Law Runes or from Draynor you can Teleport using an Amulet of Glory. Pure Essences are required to bind to the Altar. Rune Essences will not work.

Walkway to the Altar:

      Death Runes

Runecrafting Level:65
Runes out of one Essence:1

Experience Given: 10/Essence
Talisman Obtained From: the
Mourning's End Part II Quest.

Picture of Talisman:

Extra Information: Pure Essences are required to bind to the Altar. Rune Essences will not work.

Walkway to the Altar:

Through the Mourner's Basement in West Ardougne to the 1st floor.

Combination Runes

Combination Runes are Runes that have the properties of two different types in one single Rune.

They are as follows:

Mist Air & Water 6 7.5
Dust Air & Earth 10 8
Mud Earth & Water 13 8.5
Smoke Air & Fire 15 9
Steam Water & Fire 19 9.5
Lava Earth & Fire 23 10

We will do an example, to show you how it is done:
  1. Go to your Bank and decide what type of Rune you want to make. For this example, we'll make Lava Runes.

  2. To make Lava Runes you need to withdraw your Fire and Earth Talismans (see List above). You also need to decide what Altar you want to do this at. For this example, we’ll go to the Fire Altar.

  3. Withdraw 25 Earth Runes and 25 Rune Essence. Once you have this, your Inventory will be full and should look like this:

  4. Proceed to the Fire Altar with this and use your Fire Talisman on the 'Mysterious Ruins' so you can get inside.

  5. Once inside, go to the Altar and use your Earth Runes with it.

Note: Make sure you use the Earth Runes with it! If you just click on it or use the Essence with it, you will get normal Fire Runes!

  6. Now is where you might be wondering something along the lines of "Hey, I thought we were making 25 Runes, I only got 11 Lava Runes!" This is true. Combination Runes will not work every time, so you might only get 10 out of 25, or you might get 22 out of 25, it just depends on your Runecrafting Level and some luck.

Necklace of Binding

This Necklace is a very useful Tool when it comes to crafting Combination Runes as it allows you to have a 100% success rate. The Necklace of binding is an Enchanted Emerald Necklace.

DANGER: When you do this, it seems to take the Talisman of the Altar you are not at. If you were at Fire Altar with an Earth Talisman, your Earth Talisman would disappear!

Tiaras

Purpose:

The purpose of having a Tiara is that it allows you to enter the Rune Temple/Altar by clicking on the Mysterious Ruins of the Temple. This way, you do not have to carry your Talisman and you will have one extra Space for Rune Essence. It does not however, teleport you to the Altar.

How to Create a Tiara:

Crafting Level Needed: 23

Items Required: Tiara Mould, 1 Silver Bar, 1 Talisman that you want to fuse into the Tiara.

Tiara Moulds can be purchased from Crafting Stores. At most, the cost is 120 Gold Pieces. There is one in Al Kharid, Ape Atoll, and Rimmington.

Steps to Create a Tiara:
  1. With the Silver Bar and the Tiara Mould in your Inventory, use the Silver Bar on a Furnace and select make Tiara.
  2. Have the Silver Tiara, the Talisman of your choice in your Inventory and head to the Altar of the Talisman you have chosen.
  3. Enter the Altar using the Talisman, then fuse the Talisman with the Tiara by using the Talisman on the Runecrafting Altar.

Tiara Crafting
  • Crafting: 52 Experience
  • Runecrafting: Multiply by five the Experience normally received for Runecrafting with that kind of Talisman, (i.e. Air Runes give five Experience, creating the Air Tiara gives 25 Experience).
Unenchanted Tiara:
Enchanted Tiaras:

Air Tiara25 No
Mind Tiara27.5 No
Water Tiara30 No
Earth Tiara32.5 No
Fire Tiara35 No
Body Tiara37.5 No
Cosmic Tiara40 Yes
Chaos Tiara42.5 Yes
Nature Tiara45 Yes
Law Tiara47.5 Yes
Death Tiara50 Yes

Runecrafting with Tiaras:

Wear the Tiara on your Head, have 28 Rune Essence in your Inventory, Head to the Altar and click on the Mysterious Ruins. Head in, and click on the Altar binding your Rune Essence.

The Abyss

What is at the Abyss?

The Abyss is entered via the Zamorak Wizard north of Edgeville, and can access every Runecrafting Altar.

You need to have done
The Rune Mysteries Quest first though.

It hosts a huge variety of different Monsters (listed below) and is in a Multi-Combat Area of the Wilderness.

WARNING: When you enter, you will be 'Skulled' unless you wear the Abyssal Bracelet! There is also a Dark Mage located in the middle, who tells you what he is doing there.

How do I gain access to the Abyss?
  • First, you must go and talk to the Zamorakian Wizard north of Edgeville at the top of the River in Level five Wilderness. He will not talk to you if you are wearing any Guthix or Saradomin Items.

  • Then, he will ask to meet you at the "Varrock Chaos Altar" which is located to the southeast of Varrock where he will give you an Orb and ask you to visit three different People who teleport you to the Rune Essence’s.

(The List of Teleporters can be found at top of this Guide.)

  • Once you have done that, go back to Varrock and talk to him again. He will give you a Book explaining the Abyss and he gives you a "Small Pouch" which you can hold three Rune Essence in.

  • Then simply go to Edgeville and then north again in order to get him Teleport you to the Abyss!
How can I get to the Doors of the different Alters and what does the Area look like?

There are numerous different ways you can enter these Doors and they all use a different Skill. Here is the Map of how the dungeon is laid out, with each obstacle explained. Note, however, that obstacles are in different position each time you enter the Abyss. The one exception is that Go-through passage is always exactly on the opposite side.

Tips and Hints

There are literally TONS of each of these Monsters within the Abyss and since it’s a Multi-Combat Area you can get Hit quite bad, quite fast. A good tip is to run to one side of the Vine things growing out of the Floor and then only one or two can Hit you at a time which makes it MUCH easier. Also, bring Teleport Runes and a Ring of Life if you're below Level 80 Combat!

Also, the Skull DOES wear off while in the Abyss, about the same time the Skull wears off, the Monsters will stop attacking you.

Pouches:

You can only own one of each type of Pouch!

Small Pouch1 Can carry 3 Essence.
Medium Pouch25 Can carry 6 Essence.
Large Pouch50 Can carry 9 Essence.
Giant Pouch75 Can carry 12 Essence.

Note: Pouches will degrade while using them, to get them repaired speak with the Dark Wizard in the middle of the Abyss. He will fix them at no cost.

Another handy drop is the Elemental Talisman:

This Talisman will grant you access to the four Elemental Temples (Earth, Fire, Wind and Water), however, it cannot be forged into a Tiara, so while it will save you Bank Space it still costs you Inventory Space.

What to Wear

Option 1 Attire: Nothing for clothing except your Pickaxe, Glory Amulet, and Boots of Lightness.
Option 1 inventory: Ectophial, any Pouches that you may be able to use, and the rest of your inventory filled with Essence. The Ectophial is used for higher combat level runecrafters. The advantage for this is not having anything on, thus being able to move faster, being able to run longer, and not having to drink super energy potions!

Option 2 Attire: Full Black/Red/Blue/Green Dragonhide Armor, Pickaxe, Glory Amulet, and Boots of Lightness.
Option 2 inventory: Ectophial, any Pouches you may be able to use, and the rest of your inventory filled with Essence. This is used for people with some amount of money started with. The dragonhide armor is used to defend against the pkers, and able to (not by much) help defend against those Abyssal creatures. However, it does make you a little bit heavier which doesn't allow you to run for as long.

Helpful Hints/Advice/Emotion Boosters

Helpful Hints:
  • It helps to Abyssal runecraft in short but effective spurts, like running for an hour full speed, then going to go do something fun.
  • Find a fun mini game or skill to take your mind off of runecrafting for a while.
Advice
  • No matter what, if you're going to runecraft, always just do it. It doesn't matter how or when, just as long as you're getting exp!
Emotion Booster
  • Don't worry about it, you'll get your goal eventually, might as well enjoy it.
  • Don't get discouraged with dieing in the wild. The pkers are so pathetic! They think they are good, because they have to wait for a disadvantage in order to attack someone and actually win.
  • Do not hesitate to teleport, trust me it saves your skin!
