What is the Fishing Trawler?

The Fishing Trawler is one of the many mini-games available for RuneScape members. In the game, you sail in the seas of Gielinor, catching fishes into your nets. Sounds good, right? Not at all, actually. The boat is, obviously, made with such bad materials and quality that you should not surprise to encounter problems aboard it! Sometimes, leaks appear on walls, causing water to rush in. At other times, the net breaks and requires fixing to catch more fishes. Rush against time as you repair the ship, filling up the leaks and bailing the water. If you are able to make it, delicious fishes await you to eat as dinner. If you fail, YOU are going to be the dinner for the sharks. Dare to take a risk?

Where is it and how do I get there?

The Fishing Trawler is located in Port Khazard, owned by a Sailor named Murphy. There are many ways to get to Port Khazard, including walking from either Castle Wars, Ardougne or the Watchtower, where you can teleport to, using a Ring of Dueling, Ardougne Teleport and Watchtower Teleport respectively. Alternatively, you can chart a ship there, from locations like Catherby and Port Phasmatys. A map is provided for your convenience.

What do you need to bring and how do you get it?

For this mini-game, items are required, naturally. You cannot expect to fix the ship with nothing but empty hands, right? You would need three items: Swamp Paste, Rope and Bailing Buckets.

There are two ways to get the Swamp Paste, an expensive but more convenient way, and a cheaper but more tedious way. The easiest way, of course, is to buy them. The General Store in Port Khazard stock up to five hundred at a time each. Their prices are about a hundred Gold Pieces each. The General Store in Mort'ton also stocks up to a thousand Swamp Pastes at about a hundred Gold Pieces each, but you must start or complete Shades of Mort'ton Quest and either gave Razmire a Serum 208 before or give him a Serum 207 before buying from him.

As you can see, it is quite expensive when you are buying in bulk, so there is a cheaper way.

First, you need to collect Swamp Tars in swamps like Lumbridge Swamp and Mort Myre Swamp. Lumbridge Swamp is southwest of Lumbridge and Southeast of Draynor Village, while Mort Myre Swamp is southwest of Canifis and north of Mort'ton. Generally, Lumbridge Swamp is recommended, as you will be under attack by Ghasts at all times if you use the Mort Myre Swamp. Ghasts will turn your food into unusable Rotten Food if you have any in your inventory, or can damage you if you don't have any. A map is provided for your reference.

After you collected a number of Swamp Tars, a hundred is enough, you need to use it with Flour to turn it into Uncooked Swamp Paste. The easiest way to do this is by using a Pot with the Flour Barrel in the Sinclair Mansion north of Seers' Village. You can cast Camelot Teleport to teleport yourself to Camelot and then run there. It is also free, but you need to have started or completed the Murder Mystery Quest. Here is a map for your perusal.

If for some reason you can't use this method, you can buy it quite cheaply from the Food Store in Port Sarim, or the Culinaromancer's Chest in Lumbridge Castle Basement if you have started or completed the Recipe for Disaster Quest. After you have got Uncooked Swamp Paste, you obviously have to cook it. You do this by simply using it on a fire. As you cannot cook it on a Range, you have to bring your loyal Axe and Tinderbox.

Next, you need a Rope. You need around fifteen ropes for each game, but bring twenty-five to be certain. You can buy Ropes at several shops, including the two General Stores in Port Khazard, the General Store in Ardougne, from Martin Thwait in the Rogue's Den, from Shantay in the Shantay Pass and from Ned in Draynor Village.

Of course, you can always get the Rope yourself free of charge. Armed with your Shears, cut the Wool off Sheeps and spin them into Balls of Wool. Then, give them to Ned, he will trade a rope for four of your Balls of Wool.

Unfortunately, you have to buy Bailing Buckets from the General Stores in Port Khazard, so you are unable to save any money. However, you can use them forever, thus you only need to buy them once, unless you sold them or drop them. They stock up to thirty and sell it at about thirty Gold Pieces.

The Game Itself, Participants and Roles

In this mini-game, teamwork is very important. Before each game, appoint a leader and the roles of all participants. This prevents possible conflicts during the game, allowing each and every member of the team to maximize their potential. This also prevents a possible confusion of which players will do what what. It is recommended that at least four players tackle this Mini-Game together, as it is difficult for less than three people to succeed this challenging game.

Since there are three tasks aboard the Fishing Trawler, namely net fixing, leak filling and bailing, so the leader should split his or her members into three. Most of the time, only one net fixer is enough, although if the team is large enough, two or more net fixers may be employed to increase efficiency. As your team will not catch any more fishes while your net is broken, it is essential that the net remains in good condition at all time to prevent wasting valuable fishing time. By having more than one net fixer, the time taken to fix the net relatively decreases. However, in games where there are low manpower, like four or five, one net fixer is sufficient, as having more people in the other two roles ensures the team's success in this mini-game. Net fixers should bring as many Ropes as they can, with a Bailing Bucket or Swamp Pastes to help the others out when the net is in fine condition.

Next are leak patchers. Leak patcher are important roles as leaks will frequently appear on the walls of the Fishing Trawler, and it is the leak patcher's jobs to patch them up. If a leak is not filled up quickly, the water level inside the Trawler will slowly but gradually increases as seawater rushes in. To patch the hole, simply click on it while having a Swamp Paste in your inventory to patch it up. Each leak filler should have at least a hundred Swamp Pastes before boarding the ship. However, your Pastes will run out very fast, so if you want to go on more games continuously, bring more Swamp Pastes. As the boat will sink with no one to fill the leaks and stop the water from gushing in, you will fail this Mini-Game. Thus, leak fillers are very important.

The last but not least role, is the bailer. To bail means to remove water from a boat by scooping it up, so bailers will remove water that gushes into the Trawler and pour them out back into the ocean. Bailers must be fast, or the ship will sink if the water level goes up faster than the bailer can handle. To bail is very easy, just click on an empty Bailing Bucket (a normal Bucket will NOT work) to fill it up with water and click on it again to pour it out into the ocean. Bailers should bring a whole inventory of bailing buckets to be efficient. They can quickly scoop water up using one bucket after another when the trawler is almost flooded, and when things are a bit stable, they can pour away the water in all of the buckets he or she has.

Also, the screen will continously shake as if you are aboard a real ship. Be warned.

Rewards

After surviving in the Fishing Trawler for ten whole minutes, you will be able to get the rewards of your hard work! Click on the net of fishes near the Fishing Trawler at Port Khazard to collect your dinner.

Below is a list of possible rewards from the Mini-Game:

Failure

When your boat sinks, your game is over. You and your party members get to have fun swimming.

When done swimming, click on a barrel to kick your way back to land. You will end up near the Ice Caves, south of Port Sarim or the Necromancer Tower.

You can take the Charter from Port Sarim back to Port Khazard to try again.

Please note that you will not get any fishes you have caught so far if you fail a game.

Tips

  • The more the people in your team, the easier this game would be. However, be warn that you have to share the rewards.
  • Organize roles on the ship before your party members get on. This will save hassels and prevent arguments.
  • For bailers, you just have to constantly click the last Bailing Bucket in your inventory to repeatedly bail and tip water.
  • Net fixers should keep an eye on the status of the net at the top-left hand corner.
  • Do not log out halfway during the Fishing Trawler, or you will find yourself out of the game when you log back in. You will be at the shore where you log out.
  • Make sure you have inventory space for your rewards before you inspect your trawler net. Otherwise, they will all drop onto the floor and people may pick them up.
  • It is recommended to have a person in the team with Lunar Magicks and two Astral Runes, two Law Runes and eight Water Runes. This way, he or she can cast Group Khazard Teleport to bring everyone to Port Khazard after failing a game, eliminating the need for a Charter. All party members must stand within one square of the teleporting person, and must have their Accept Aid turned on.
  • If you choose to take the Charter back to Port Khazard after you fail a game, remember to take money for your trip.
  • Players prone to seasickness should be warned that the screen moves up and down continuously as if on a real ship. If you start feeling sick during the game, it is advised to stop looking at the screen for the remainder of the mini-game and stay away from it in future. Don't be concerned, there are plenty of other ways to have fun in RuneScape!

Conclusion

This Mini-Game is no doubt one of the most challenging Mini-Games. It needs not only skill, luck, timing and coordination, but teamwork as well. Conquer it, and you can call yourself one of the best RuneScape players! But remember, the most important is to have fun!
