Map of Tutorial Island

This is the Map of the Island where you'll start your adventures in RuneScape.

  1. RuneScape Guide and Interacting

Once you've created a RuneScape account you start on Tutorial Island, a place made to prepare newcomers to the World of RuneScape. To start you must choose your Character's gender and appearance.

After choosing how your Character should look, you'll find yourself in a Room with a Man wearing a Red Beret. This is the RuneScape Guide and an Arrow should be flashing above his Head. Left click on him to talk to him. He'll tell you about interacting with People and Scenery and the use of right-clicking on Objects.

After talking to him, you must move and an Arrow appears above the nearby Door. Left click the Door to open it and walk outside.

  2. The Survival Expert

Throughout your stay on Tutorial Island, there will be a Bar at the bottom of the Screen showing your progress. After completing a task, part of the Bar fills up. Once it's filled completely, the Tutorial is over.

Outside, you are told to walk down a Hill to the Survival Expert. She has a flashing Arrow over her Head. To walk, just click on the Area you wish to walk to.

Brynna gives you a Tinderbox and Bronze Hatchet in order for you to learn how to make a Fire.

The Items go into your Inventory, on the right of the Screen, click on the Backpack Icon to view it.

Now go up to one of the Trees in the Area and left click on it to start chopping, after a while you'll get some Logs which appear in your Inventory. Left click on the Tinderbox so it glows white, and then click on the Logs.

You'll now attempt to start a Fire, after a short time, you should have lit one. You gain Firemaking Experience for doing this and Woodcutting Experience for Chopping the Tree. To view your Stats, click the Graph Icon on the right, near the Backpack. Now you must talk to Brynna the Survival Expert again.

She tells you about Fishing and gives you a Net to catch Shrimp in the Pond.

Head to the Fishing Spot, indicated by the Arrow and click on it to begin Fishing. After a few seconds, you should have caught a Shrimp for your Inventory.

After catching a Fish, it's time to Cook it! Click on the Fish and then click on a Fire. If there aren't any, light your own. You'll either Cook or burn the Fish. Keep trying until you Cook it.

Dinner is served! Having Cooked your first Shrimp you must move on. A flashing Arrow appears on the Map, click on that Area to move there and click on the Gate to open it.

  3. More Cooking with the Master Chef

The next House is Home to the Master Chef, there to teach newcomers more about Cooking. Talk to him. Once again, the Arrow indicates who to talk to.

Lev will teach you how to make, break and use Music during RuneScape. A fine combination!

You'll be given a Pot of Flour and a Bucket of Water. Click on one of them, then the other to Mix them and make Bread Dough. Use this with the Range with the flashing Arrow above it.

You will hopefully Cook the Bread. If you fail, try again! Next you'll be introduced to the Jukebox. Click on the Icon at the bottom right to see the Music you can play. As you explore RuneScape, more Tunes will be unlocked. You can now leave the Building through the Door with the Arrow above it.

  4. Running and the Quest Guide

Back outside, click on the flashing Icon next to the Jukebox Icon and click on Run. You can now run around until your Energy reaches 0%. Run to the next Building to learn about Quests from the Guide.

You'll be told to open the Quest Menu, by clicking the flashing Icon. This gives you a list of Quests. Clicking on a Quest tells you the requirements and where to start the Quest. Talk to him again. He'll explain Quests more before inviting you to use the Ladder in the Building, click on it.

  5. Mining and Combat Training

Going down the Ladder brings you Underground. Walk/Run until you come to the Mining Instructor. Talk to him to learn about Mining.

He'll tell you to go over to a Rock and prospect it. Right click on the Rock and choose "Prospect Rocks". It will tell you what kind of Ore is present in the Rock. In this Room, all of the Rocks are either Copper or Tin. Head back to him after prospecting both types of Rock to learn how to Mine using a Pickaxe. It's similar to Woodcutting.

Afterwards, you'll learn about Smithing. Simply take your Copper and Tin Ore to the Furnace, click the Ore and then the Furnace and you'll have a Bronze Bar. Then, using the Hammer the Instructor gave you, Smith it. (Click on the Bar followed by one of the Anvils).

You can only make Bronze Daggers at this point. Now move on to the next Room Underground.

  6. Combat Training

Having gone through the Gate, you'll be in the Combat Training Room. Speak to the Combat Instructor (Level 146!) to learn about Combat in RuneScape. Vannaka isn't the most friendly Person in RuneScape but he'll teach you to wield a Weapon and fight.

Remember that Bronze Dagger you made, wield that and speak to him again. He'll give you a Wooden Shield and Bronze Sword to help you fight. Now you must go into the Cage filled with Giant Rats and kill one. Don't worry about dying, your health won't go below one.

Each Rat has three Hit Points. It's hard to hit them at first but as you Level up, it will become easier. The Rat should drop Runes, pick them up. Talk to Vannaka again. He'll give you a Shortbow and fifty Bronze Arrows.

Now go range those Rats, (Range in the RuneScape terminology for Archery or using Weapons that are for longer distance). They can't reach you so it's a much safer option. Again, you will be hitting a lot of 0’s at lower Levels but with practice, greater damage can be dealt. To equip the Bow, you must unequip both the Sword and Shield.

After killing a Rat, leave via the Ladder.

  7. The Bank

Back in the fresh air, you'll be next to a Building. This is the Bank. Go in and talk to the Banker to deposit and withdraw Items. Next go through the Door to the right to see the Financial Advisor. He'll tell you how to make Money!

After a very brief talk, leave the Building through the Door.

  8. The Chapel

The next Building is the Chapel, where you'll find Brother Brace. Talk to him.

He will teach you about Prayer and the list of Prayers, accessed by the Icon on the right. As your Prayer Level increases, the number of Prayers available increase too. They help in Combat but drain as they stay on. Prayer can be recharged at any Altar. He'll also tell you about the Friend and Ignore Lists. Now exit the Chapel and head to the final Building: The Wizard's House!

  9. The Wizard's House

The final place you'll visit on the Island is the Home of a Magic Teacher, Terrova. Talk to him to learn about Runes and Magic.

He will give you the Air and Mind Runes needed for casting the Wind Strike Spell. Go to the Chickens, select the Spell from the list and blast them! The chances are you won't hit them and you'll run out of Runes. Go back to Terrova. He will give you more Runes on the mainland.

At this point your first Adventure will come to an end, and you are given the option of leaving the Island. When you're ready select Yes to be taken to Lumbridge.
